Phalaenopsis are perhaps the most popular orchids today. Also refered to as the "Moth Orchid", they are now seen in a vast selection of hybrids boasting fantastic colours and patterns. These plants can be in bloom for months at a time. They are quite easy to grow and are very rewarding. This group also includes Dortinopsis - a close relative
Vandas (derived from the Sanskrit name for the species: Vanda tessellata) are found in a range from Austrailia, through south east Asia and into India and the Himalayas. They feature flattened flowers growing on a lateral inflorescence. This genus is highly used in hybridization, but many species are classed as endagered because of habitat destruction. International export of wild-collected specimens is prohibited (as are many orchids) under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. (CITES)
