These
flowers have the distinction of being most popular as corsages.
Countless plants have given there prize blooms for weddings, high
school proms and father and son banquets (!?!). In the early nineteenth
century, Mr. William Cattley rescued these plants from an English dung
heap where they had been discarded after being used as protective
packing material for other plants being shipped from South America
(pre-Victorian bubble wrap). Imagine Bill’s surprise when one of them
bloomed. Dr. John Lindley named the genus in Cattley’s honour in 1824.
