Diversity within Bulbophyllum
seems endless. The umbrella-like inflorescences of some are almost
daisey like, looking more like single blossoms than the bouquet of
flowers they really are. In others, the petals are reduced to almost
hair like structures that wave in the breeze and look like the antennae
of an insect emerging from the flower; perhaps the structures attract
real insects that might pollinate the flower. Still others are rather
plain. Several species are noted for their amazingly unpleasant
fragrance (but beauty is in the nose of the besmeller). Understandably,
these plants are pollinated by carrion insects.
